The task of this project was to design a mobile educational display of a country of our choosing. The display is the approximate size of a shipping container and may have components that fold or retract. This container may have wheels or be transported by another vehicle such as a semi truck. This display will travel on roadways from location to location. In order for it to travel on roadways the container can not exceed 8 feet in width and 12 feet in height to travel safely with other vehicles and under bridges or overpasses.
The country I chose was Palau. Palau is located east of the Philippines and southwest of Guam. Palau consists of three hundred volcanic and and raised coral islands and is 191 square miles. The Bai Gable is important to the country of Palau and is a thatched building that is the center of political, social, and artistic life. These aspects of life are important to the people of Palau and are used in the design of the interior. The interior will showcase interactive elements of their social and artistic life. This structure serves as a symbol to this country and served as the inspiration to my design.
The container consists of a retractable roof that mimics the roof of the Bai Gable. Each component is able to retract and fold down to allow for easy travel on roadways. The Bai Gable consists of many symbols that vary from fish, to sharks, and to roosters to represent unison and community. These symbols can be found in components of the roof and in the columns and beams in the interior. The exterior and interior mimic the materials that would be found in a traditional Bai Gable. This allows the users to understand the materials that are commonly used in this structure.
Before entering the structure there is a dance floor where you are greeted with those performing traditional dances and wearing traditional clothing. The dances vary from war stances and stick dances. Then when you enter the container you are greeted by a basket weaving station which is a developed art form and commonly practiced in the country of Palau. To the left of this activity is a poetry reading area. Poetry is the most developed form of literature and there are well known poets that come from this country. To right of the basket weaving station is a bar where you can order traditional drinks. The three areas found in the interior are a true representation of the country of Palau and allow those who enter to be immersed in the elements that Palau values. Lastly there is a pop-out marine sancturary that can be accessed from the interior or exterior and showcases the marine life of Palau. Palau is known for having one of the largest marine sanctuaries in the world and this exhibit allows users to feel like they are in an aquarium. By considering the elements of Palau that are important to them has allowed me to create a mobile display that is educational and accurately showcases the country.
